How do we keep kids safe without calling the police or Child Protective Services? Addressing violence toward children requires us to be proactive and creative. How can we listen to the needs of children and involve them in this process? Participants will work collaboratively to address child safety in various scenarios and will leave more confident to start practicing these strategies in their communities.

We’re excited to announce special guest facilitator zara raven!

zara raven is a Caribbean queer care worker, transformative justice practitioner, and zinester based in Philadelphia. For the past four years, zara has organized with the Philly Childcare Collective, and previously zara coordinated Queenie’s Crew, a project supporting kids and their caregivers in building communities of care without prisons or policing. zara loves roller skating, Black feminist theory, and crafting.

This virtual workshop is for everyone who wants to be an active participant in creating safety for kids.

This event is an interactive companion to our Reclaiming Safety essay and podcast series where we explore challenging questions about abolishing the family policing system. Together, we can imagine responses that can create real safety for families in crisis—without calling Child Protective Services and causing more harm. To prepare for this workshop, we recommend reading “Reclaiming Safety for Children Who Experience Physical Violence” which is an introduction to the topics we will discuss.
